Abstract

The nature of the Japanese education system, which is very authoritarian. Such a teacher-centered approach makes the development of critical thinking and reading skills challenging. This article argues for the importance of critical reading skills and discusses approaches to teaching critical reading for academic purposes in the Japanese context.
